GLBT Signs

I found this article rather interesting. I personally have never viewed homosexually as a bad thing, but rather how someone is born. But I know this is a debatable issue and I realize that it is considered a sin, but I have a hard time seeing people being homosexual as being a sin. But that’s my own thought on it.

I liked this article because it talks about how Bethel has morals and standpoints but it’s important to be nice to everyone and not judge. I personally enjoyed seeing the signs on the professors’ doors saying ‘homophobic speech not tolerated here’. I think it’s important to love everyone no matter where they are with their life.

Plane Crash Exercise (write a news report using the information give about a Continental plane crashing):

A continental plane has crashed on the house of 312 Main Street which was the home of Jim and Janet Jones. At 10:05pm there was a report of an explosion. It was reported to have sounded like a pop, bang, and wine sound. There are no survivors from the plan and neighbors have reported that Jim and Janet Jones have not been seen. A neighbor has also reported that they saw the daughter of the Jones go into the house earlier tonight before the crash.

It is confirmed that the attacker who stabbed him is also a 17 year old junior at the high school; he has been taken to the police headquarters for questioning. The victim was stabbed with a box cutter, the motive is not yet confirmed but students are saying it was over an argument about a girl they both liked. Ira Glass on Storytelling

Ira Glass on Storytelling #1

  • Understand the building blocks of the stories.
  • Building Block One: Anecdote- sequence of actions. Helps make the feel of destination. Constantly  be raising questions.
  • Building Block Two: Moment of reflection. “Heres why the hell your listening to this story, here is the point to the story.”
  • Both the building blocks need to be good to make a good story.

Ira Glass on Storytelling #2

  • It’s hard to find a decent story.
  • Often the amount of time is takes to come up with the story is longer than the amount of time it takes to produce the story.
  • You should abandon crap.
  • You have to be a “killer” with getting rid of the boring parts.
  • Failure is a big part of success.
  • You have to record and get rid of a lot of crap before getting anything special.

Ira Glass on Storytelling #3

  • Most people in creative fields go through a phase of making all crap but they have good taste (everybody goes through it, it’s totally normal).
  • ”Don’t underline every third word for emphasis because it sounds very unnatural.”
  • Talk the way everybody talks.
  • Its normal to take awhile to get good.

Ira Glass on Storytelling #4

  • Two common pitfalls:
  • When people talk/act like people they see on TV (you should talk like yourself, do not imitate someone else)
  • and when people only talk about themselves.

  • Make questions short and clear.
  • After the interview thank and ask the subject how they think the interview went.
  • Practice makes perfect.

MediaStorm

  • Ambient sounds can be a good thing.
  • You can do the interview and then record the background noise seperately.
  • A good interview takes energy.
  • Look at the person when you talk to them.
  • Ask two questions at a time if you want a better statement from the subject.
  • Ask open-ended questions.
  • Silence is important.
  • Know how to use the equipment you are using.
  • Be completely silent when the subject is speaking.
  • Be aware of natural sound.
  • Wear headphones.
  • Don’t hesitate to ask the speaker to repeat what they said.

  • you can affect a listener by showing how an issue touches someones life
  • let the subject communicate in their own words
  • be enthused about your story
  • be prepared before recording

 Storytelling for the Web
